EcoLut Forum

One particularly beautiful project is the seminar building EcoLut-Forum in Engelskirchen near Cologne. The name is based on the Latin word for clay (lut) and embodies both ecological and economic thinking.
Wood from the surroundings constitute the structural foundation. Integrated in various forms, the clay provides a comfortable indoor climate and combines with the wood in a way that has been used for centuries and perfectly refined in this case. The architects Stefan Mekus and Bernhard Bramlage have given shape to the conceptual idea, in which natural building methods and modern architecture harmonise perfectly.
What is impressive is the two-storey high rammed clay wall in the entrance area, into which a fireplace and several gas passes are integrated. Installed on the inner sides of the outer walls are stacked adobe shells to store heat. On top of that is a wall panel heating system which provides pleasant warmth in the cold and damp climate of the Bergisches Land. The walls and ceilings of the rooms are covered with fine clay plaster which is partially painted white. With the EcoLut-Forum, the client Jörg Deselaershas ambitiously realised a consistent and bold example. The result is an event centre with a unique charm.
